One of the reasons why I've been in such bad physical condition is that I never thought about food. I ate things that taste good. I was pretty shocked to start learning what things are high calorie and what things are low calorie when I started paying attention. For example. I could eat this:
Or this:
For about the same number of calories. And no. That's actually not an exaggeration.
Turns out though, there's even more of a science to food than I counted on before. When I went to see the acupuncturist last week, I found out that there are certain foods that, when eaten together, help your body digest stuff better. Don't worry. The level of personal detail in this entry stops there. I found the concept fascinating though. Its like a carpool lane for your colon. And fruit's not invited.
No, seriously, fruit doesn't combine well with anything, apparently. Water either. You're supposed to only drink water before or after a meal, not during.
So, armed with my handy chart and several as yet unused pans, I set out to make a meal of it. I had chicken with a teriyaki glaze (only a small amount cause you're not supposed to mix meat and sweet in a meal) and squash because, squash goes with everything. Its the little black dress of vegetables.
A couple things stood out to me. First - I didn't get to have a starch with the meal. Its not that I couldn't eat one that day. Its that, according to food combining rules, I'd have to finish digesting my dinner first. Which, of course, is why I had popcorn later. Second - it really wasn't that hard to actually pay attention to my food. I didn't magically lose the ability to eat things I liked.
I think I'll probably stick to food combining. It stokes my OCD nicely.
