In less than a week from this date, my friends Lisa and Ben got married. I blame them, utterly and completely, for me getting behind on entries. Luckily, they make up for it by being incredible human beings whose wedding was a blessing to be a part of. You know, so there's that.
Now, I'd not been to a bridal shower before. When our good friend Alana got married in Hawaii, I could only get a couple days of class off so I had to miss most of the pre-festivities. Consequently, the only thing I know about bridal showers is what I've been told by my parents and seen on the HBO. Thus it was my assumption, as well as my parents' assumptions, that the bride was to be embarrassed with hilariously risque gifts. Luckily we realized that was not the case this time before it was too late.
Hi Ben's Gramma!
We realized a few days before the shower that it was a family affair being put on by Ben's family and that the risque gifts would be better left for another time (ie: the pending entry on bachelorette parties). In reality, the bridal shower rivaled the cuteness of the couple themselves. There were take home gifts (I got homemade brownie mix) and delicious food. It was nice to see so many people who love the bride and groom getting together to share the afternoon.
My mom and I chipped in on a pearl necklace for Lisa, which was closer to the right tone for gifts than either of our original, hilariously inappropriate thoughts. For the most part, people gave wine, gift cards or things from the registry, which was probably a good way to do it. I was struck by how laid back it was. For the most part, the shower seemed to be a chance to spend an afternoon with Lisa basking in her impending nuptials. There wasn't really pomp or circumstance to it, though I can't entirely explain why I thought there might be.
The point is, it was lovely. As was the bride on her wedding day. Pictures to follow.
