Day 124 - Participate in Pub Trivia

Date: May 10th, 2010

I always operated under the assumption that I would rock the freakin' world at Jeopardy.  Sometimes, when I watch it, I yell at the TV over how obvious the answers are.  Of course, there's no one taking money from me when I get them wrong so I tend to only notice when I'm right.  Turns out, when I pay attention, I'm significantly less accurate at trivia than I thought I was.

My friend Tim called and asked if I'd be interested in joining him and Christine for pub trivia at Conor O'Neils in Ann Arbor.  The bar has it every week on Mondays and Wednesdays.  We went to the Monday version since it had a wider variety of topics.  Now, follow my logic here.  The way I figured it is this.  I'm a genius.  I mean, that part's undisputed.  So, of course, I would rock the universe at pub trivia.  Who better to win pub trivia than someone who can answer questions based on asinine and trivial pieces of data, recalled at random for seemingly no reason?  Exactly what I thought.  More than that, my teammates were like, crazy smart, too.  All three of them.

Genius number three not pictured.

Trivia was a lot harder than I thought it would be.  I was shocked and amazed at the number of useless pieces of information that I didn't know.  There were quite a few rounds with various areas of focus.  I have to say that I struggled the most with the movie and music sections.  There are so many possible things to choose from, none of which I was forced to study in school.  Like that Fred Savage is apparently not Kirk Cameron.

Not Kirk Cameron.

Not Fred Savage.

They do look alike, damnit.  I'm not crazy.

As for the best team on earth... we placed around the middle of the pack.  A lot of the questions were darn near impossible.  It was impressive that a lot of the other teams were able to remember those things.  Its ok though, we won the only contest that mattered - we had the best team name of all time.  We were the one and only "Mercenary Spelunkers".  I loved pub trivia.  It was a great way to socialize and bond, the questions were amusing and even though it would've been nice to win, there wasn't pressure about losing.  We just hung out and had a good time.  I had no idea I would love it that much.  It was a great end to a great day!
