Day 120 - Place a Facebook Ad

Date: May 6th, 2010

In the spirit of shameless self-promotion I have made a logo, gotten business cards and begun working with a publicist.  Although, the logo was a creative exercise.  And, well, the business cards needed to happen for school and professional stuff, so why not have blog cards too?  Ok, so, the publicist is a wonderful family friend who taught me a lot about that industry.  So I guess its not totally shameless.  Buying an ad on Facebook, on the other hand, was absolutely shameless self-promotion.

I decided I wanted to see what it was like to run an ad campaign, so that was going to be my thing of the day.  When I saw how easy Facebook makes it to place an ad, I decided that it would be a little inappropriate to call it running an ad campaign.  Although, I did claim to have flown a couple months back so, it wouldn't be the first time I called my daily thing whatever the heck I wanted to.  I mostly wanted to try and understand what goes in to advertising a product.

Facebook has a neat system.  It's an ad generator.  You just put the info, your logo (how convenient), and your URL into their system and an ad pops up for your use and enjoyment.  The more interesting part was the demographic focusing that Facebook can do.  I didn't even think about it until I got to the page (I blame my blondness, cause it was fairly obvious), but Facebook knows your gender.  It knows your location.  I knows when you're sleeping and when you're awake.  It knows if you've been bad or good so untag all those pictures for goodness sake.

Whoever tagged this is not your friend.

The thing that was most surprising to me was the price.  I was able to set a cost ceiling for the ad of only $2.00 per day and it might not even hit that much.  I like the system.  I means even on a budget, you can advertise your group or event.  I chose to leave the target audience fairly broad, but I've seen student groups run ads as well.  They make the system incredibly easy to follow.

So, if you see my ad on your page... clicky clicky.  You know you want to.
