Day 194 - Install a Portable Air Conditioner

Date: July 19th, 2010

For the last week, during the heatwave that gripped the country, I was in a place in Lansing without benefit of air conditioning.  While it was a great way to empathize with people who can't afford A/C, it was also a freaking nightmare when it came to sleeping comfortably, not sweating and, you know, existing in general.  I did develop a good system after a while.  I would alternate freezing three towels.  The first towel I placed on my head and waited until the joyful chill started to fade.  When it was half frozen and half thawed, I moved it to my feet and took the second towel out of the freezer.  When the foot towel got warm and the head towel got semi-thawed, it was time to rotate.

That was significantly more information than you probably needed, except that I think the world needed to understand the level of complex thought brought on by the heat wave.  Rather than getting to sit back, zone out and enjoy my afternoons after work, I spent precious hours contemplating the nature of frozen towels.

After about a week of my ceaseless complaining (and I do mean ceaseless - I was a whiny little brat about it), my friends Dawn and Wes were kind enough to say I could borrow their portable A/C unit for my place.  The only problem?  I had literally no idea how to install it.  There's some bar that goes in the window and these weird robot-arm-looking tubes that randomly expand into your face while you're carrying the thing upstairs.  Its awkward.  On the bright side, it was really easy to figure out.  The tubes pump the hot air out and suck air from outside in so that it can be blown into the room in all its newly freezing goodness.  And now my place is bearable.  Huzzah!

Actually, in all seriousness, it got me thinking about how much this project has effected me.  I no longer worry about messing up tasks like installing an A/C unit or doing my taxes.  I know I can figure it out because I've set my mind to it.  Its amazing how much confidence little victories like that can inspire now that I've stopped long enough to notice them.  I'm so delightfully please with how things are now.  Its a wonderful feeling.
