Several of the things I've done this year have been about maintaining or creating balance. I'm starting to discover a side of myself that is much more calm and zen focused than before. For a long time, I thought that was something that would conflict with my Christian beliefs. What I'm finding is that it strengthens them to acknowledge the inherent energy of the universe around us. Given that heightened connection to God that I've been experiencing, whenever there is a chance to learn something new about energy work, Reiki, etc... I've jumped at the chance.
I was looking the delightful calendar on ArborWeb.com and I stumbled onto something called a Reiki share. It was listed as a free event and, as is generally the case with things I've never heard of, I knew I'd never done it before. Justin and I headed over to the Mind Body Wellness Center on the south side of Ann Arbor to take a look around and see what the dilly-yo was.
The dilly-yo, apparently, was the brainchild of a local Reiki practitioner in Ann Arbor who noticed that there is a lot of variation in the practice of Reiki in the area. Some people knew some things and others seemed to know others. Not unlike how the nature and substance of a particular piece of legislation seems completely different to people who watch MSNBC than to those who watch FOXNEWS. And, of course, people who watch CNN are mostly just doing it to see Rick Sanchez get tased.
Yeah, that's the stuff.
The first thing I noticed is that the center seemed incredibly peaceful. It is set back a ways off of State St. south of the railroad tracks, which is a pretty heavy traffic area. Once you get to the building itself though, there is almost no road noise at all. The center is laid out in two main areas. There is a small tea shop with tables and books on one side and on the other is an open space designed to be deeply calming. The whole building has a lovely warmth to it and the people there were incredibly eager to help in any way they could.
Chairs are for the unenlightened.
Once things got going, I found the whole experience really informative. I got a nice, brief history lesson about what Reiki is and how it started in modern practice. Then had a Reiki treatment that reinforced my belief that there is definitely something to all this energy mumbo-jumbo. In particular, what is nice about the Reiki shares is that they are designed to be fluid and open to whatever the people attending want them to be. For me, because I knew so little about the practice and hadn't ever experienced a full, intense Reiki treatment, we did that. For someone who has been around the block a few times, the discussion would've been more about practice, technique and other more detailed aspects of Reiki.
The shares are a great way to learn about and explore Reiki. I wish there were things like this for more areas of study. It would be a great way to dip my feet in.
