Day 234 - Watch a Marx Bros. Movie

Date: August 28th, 2010

I have tended to avoid doing things that are just slight variations on things I've already done.  At the beginning of things I told people I wouldn't go eat at the Olive Garden in Ypsi and count it because I hadn't been to that location before.  I made a few exceptions for particularly interesting or unusual variations.  I counted authentic pizza and Ethiopian food because those are more than just variations - they are unique and untested.  They present an opportunity for a new experience.  Such was the case with watching a Marx Brothers movie.

Now, Saturday was an incredible day.  I got to sleep in and then Justin and I hung out in pajamas and watched Night at the Opera, which is apparently one of the Marx Brothers' premier movies.  After the movie, around 11am, we realized that the wedding we were supposed to attend in Grand Rapids was, in fact, at 1:30 and not at 4:30 as we'd previously believed.  Now, I've had 8am classes for the last three years.  I have long since mastered the art of the 30 second shower.  Justin also managed an impressively fast turn around time and we made it into the car about ten minutes after realizing what the actual start time of the wedding was.

The wedding was for my friend Nick and his fiance Tara.  I'd spent a decent amount of time hanging out with Nick in college, but hadn't met Tara.  That didn't change the fact that they were obviously incredibly happy.  It was a beautiful ceremony.  It made me distinctly aware of the fact that you can really tell when two people are deeply in love.  I didn't have to have met Tara to know she was the right girl for Nick.  It was clear just from the way they looked at each other and interacted together.  Plus she let him have a Nintendo themed wedding cake.  That's some serious nerd love right there.

It was on the way back from the wedding that Justin and I decided we should give this whole "us" thing a try.  To be fair, it wasn't because of the wedding that we made that decision.  I'd been thinking about it for almost a month, but I wasn't ready to say anything.  He'd been thinking about it for a month, but he knew I wasn't ready to say anything so he bit his tongue.  Looking back right now, that's incredibly touching to me.  I'm type A, by nature.  Getting to "make the decision" is like getting early Christmas presents for me.

In any case, given the epic nature of the day (from racing across the state to uber-giddiness), I almost forgot to give the Marx Brothers movie the focus it deserved.  I did like it.  It was definitely different than modern films.  I was surprised to find myself laughing at the jokes because I tend to like raunchy, dirty humor and that was conspicuously absent from the film.  There was, however, better wordplay than I've ever seen.

What all does this little movie review amount to?  I guess just that I didn't realize how much seeing something could be a new experience.  I really didn't expect to like the movie.  I'd anticipated boredom, but instead I really enjoyed it.  It was a surprisingly lovely start to what ended up being an epically amazing day.
