Up next in our series: "things I really should've done by now"... getting a flu shot. Don't worry kids, I'm vaccinated. However, I generally avoided getting a flu shot for one of a few good good reasons.
- There are often shortages. I am an able-bodied 20-something. I'm not taking a flu shot from a 7-year-old or a 70-year-old. It just doesn't seem right.
- They sometimes give people the flu. Granted its not as bad as getting it would be without the shot... but I rarely get sick so I generally do the flu version of Russian roulette and hope for the best.
- I hate needles. They are ucky and they make me sad.
Total buzzkill.
- They are often administered in grocery stores and other "not a doctor's office" style places. I know its, like, totes silly, but I feel a great comfort at the sight of clipboards, color-coded rooms and partially destroyed children's toys. Not to mention Highlights magazine.
But this place looked legit.
There was little "new experience" value to getting my flu shot. I went to the grocery store. I filled out a form. A chick stuck a needle in my arm. Then I went home. There was one thing in particular that was good about today. It got me thinking about my health quite a bit. Like I said, my general policy was to play a little flu-Russian roulette when the season hit and hope for the best.
There are definitely things to take chances with, but I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that health isn't one of them. While I won't be pushing any kindergartners or grannies out of the way to get my flu shot next year; I do plan on getting it again.
But next year I want my freakin' lollipop.
