January 13: Rubber Ducky Day

Today was a beautiful and poignant homage to one of nature's most overlooked mallards: the rubbercilious mallardocious, or "Rubber Ducky".  Thankfully, this majestic creature has a special day once a year in its tiny, adorable honor.

Not that kind of rubber...

Many millennia ago, rubber duckies were plentiful and roamed the earth.  They lived in peace with early humans, whom they regarded with polite disdain.  Indeed it was a blissful time for the duck kingdom.  But then, one fateful day, mega-duck (the largest of the rubber duckies) went crazy and placed a curse on the duck kingdom.  "I'm rubber and you're glue - everything you say bounces off of me and sticks to you" he said, over and over again.  And so the Curse of the Rubber was born.  Words bounced from their ears and they couldn't hear.  Food and drink bounced from their mouths and they couldn't eat.  Eventually, their only recourse was to go into a deep hibernation.  Once a year, they stretch their tiny beaks and come out of hibernation and gaze upon the world the humans created during their slumber.  January 13th was that day.

Most of the ducks just wanted a quiet day at home, but one chose to come to work with me and one joined Justin on his errands.  Without further adieu, we present Duck Tales (woo woo).

First, Justin drove me to work, with Bo Duckbechler tagging along.

Bo proved to be an invaluable companion throughout the day.

In honor of their wakening, I agreed to carry Bo Duckbechler around the entire day - to each of my meetings - and not to hide him at my side.  This meant walking around the office with one hand in front of me, as though I was holding a tray, and Bo propped on my hand.  About midway through the day, I was meeting with my boss and Bo was tagging along.  She spent the whole meeting glancing at him, but did not ask why I had a rubber ducky with me at work.  I did not offer an explanation.  It was unintentionally hilarious.  And since my boss is a lovely person, I did go back and explain the holiday a little later in the day.

After dropping me off, Justin and Ducky Olsen went about some errands and getting things ready for dinner.

First they hit the grocery store

Then grabbed something for lunch

Back at the house, things had gotten a little out of hand between Tex Duckington and Duck-Merica Jones.

Once that calmed down, Ducky Olsen helped bring in the groceries.

Unfortunately, while Justin was bringing in the last of the groceries, the duckies found his sandwich.

So he put them to work helping with dinner...

...and cleaning the counters.

The duckies were pretty tired after that and had already started going back into hibernation so we didn't get to play any board games with them.  Still, it was lovely to share their one day out with them.  We look forward to duck-sitting again this time next year.  Until then...

Rubber Ducky, you're the one,
You make bath time lots of fun,
Rubber Ducky, I'm awfully fond of you;
(woh woh, bee doh!)
Rubber Ducky, joy of joys,
When I squeeze you, you make noise!
Rubber Ducky, you're my very best friend, it's true!
(doo doo doo doooo, doo doo)
Every day when I
Make my way to the tubby
I find a little fella who's
Cute and yellow and chubby
(rub-a-dub-a-dubby!)
Rubber Ducky, you're so fine
And I'm lucky that you're mine
Rubber ducky, I'm awfully fond of you.
(repeat chorus)
Rubber Ducky, you're so fine
And I'm lucky that you're mine
Rubber ducky, I'm awfully fond of -
Rubber ducky, I'd like a whole pond of -
Rubber ducky I'm of -
Rubber ducky I'm awfully fond of you!
(doo doo, be doo.)
