Day 30 - Make a Shower Mohawk

Date: February 5th, 2010

In my life I have found that quite a few things bring me a sense of pure and unadulterated joy.  Off the top of my head I'm going to say... my family; good friends; a child's laughter; the feeling of sand between my toes in summer; sunrise over a cloudless sky; the smell of kumquat and fig; crayons in the following shades: tropical rain forest, burnt sienna, purple mountain's majesty, neon carrot and jazzberry jam; crab rangoon at China Gate; and, of course, the song "Move On Up" by the incomparable Curtis Mayfield.

I found another one today.

See, for the longest time I've had hair down past my shoulders.  Not only that, its thick hair that tangles easily.  In other words, if I want to get out of the shower in less than 45 minutes, I don't get to play around and be silly.  Remember the iconic scene in Ferris Bueller's Day Off where Ferris starts singing to his shower head?  Yeah... I know... that's a lot information, but just pretend we're having a sharing day here for a minute.

Anyway, I hopped in the shower this morning and prepared for the epic struggle that is getting the tangles out of my hair for the day.  That fight generally starts with a generous dollop of shampoo.  Like.  A palm sized dollop.  Have you ever felt 2/3 of the shampoo you put on your head run down your back in a single, seemingly sentient blob of freezing cold jelly?  I have.  Because the hair that was supposed to catch that sentient blob is on a plane to Florida to be made into a wig at the moment.

That's when it hit me.  There are so many showery things that people get to do that I've never done.  So I grabbed the brush I won't need for the next two months and started singing into it (horribly off key despite the great acoustics the shower does provide).  Then I gave a speech to my constituents apologizing for misusing city funds while in office (I have an odd, but rich fantasy life).  Then it hit me... I've never had a shower mohawk before.  My hair has always been too long.  It would never stand up on its own.

So I took the leap.

I got so excited I actually stepped out to take a picture, which brings me to the reason I started off this entry by talking about joy.  I have noticed significantly more of it in my life recently.  I notice things that I didn't notice before - I see the opportunity for an experience in places I would've walked past with my head down a few months ago.  Its wonderful.  Everyday is a burnt sienna sunrise and a jazzberry jam sunset rolled into one.

I spent the better part of the next 45 minutes making various shapes with my hair in the shower.  Because I can.  Though I did discover one other amusing side effect of the new haircut.  See, before I cut it, I had a lot of hair.  So when I got out of the shower I'd wrap it in a special, super-absorbent towel to make it dry faster.  I don't need that towel.  To me that's a huge victory.

Also.  I look like a Bond villain, which is awesome.

So.  That was my day.  I showered.  It was new and fun.
