I've started to feel a bit of a second wind, which I was hoping for and counting on for the last month or so. I'm particularly excited because I adore Christmas and I can't wait to geek out with all sorts of holiday traditions I've never had any business participating in before. As for this last week, it is, most assuredly, the last boring week you all will be subjected to. Bring on the holiday cheer!
Day 310 - Paint Something Ceramic
Date: November 12th, 2010
I started feeling artsy again last weekend so I bought out the adorable bobble-head pig that I got at the beginning of the year as a back up project and painted it up nice. I'm excited. More importantly, now that its dry, I'm going to go back and put a bandana on it so it will be BANDITO PIGGY!
Day 311 - Take Jello Shots with my Boyfriend's Mom
Date: November 13th, 2010
That was just surreal. And hilarious. And cherry flavored. We went to a party for Justin's mom's friend (and his and mine) for her birthday. She had jello shots and, well, theater of the absurd, I simply couldn't resist the experience.
Alternatively, I would like to point out that I did something else there that I've never done before. I ate Sloppy Joe's. I had never had them before. I never thought I'd like them as a kid and when I got older I just never tried them. They were gosh darn delicious.
Day 312 - Attempt to Donate a Bed to Charity
Date: November 14th, 2010
Did you know there's a bedbug scare? I didn't realize it was all the way out here. I thought it was just in the slummy hotels in New York... like the Waldorf-Astoria. Anyway, the point is, even perfectly good mattresses are suspect. Before I even got the liftgate open on the car, the guy was shaking his head and turning us away. The Salvation Army only accepts new mattresses in plastic right now. While frustrating, it was also understandable.
So why in the heck did I count this as a new thing? Cause I never did that before. I had no concept of that fact that there might be restrictions on something as simple as a bed. More to the point, I knew for me that I'd never donate a bed with an infestation (no would my friend Tim, whose mattress we were donating), but it occurred to me later that there are people who would do that. Which is kind of sad. You know what isn't sad? Puppies. Ok, all better.
Day 313 - Donate Something to the Reuse Center
Date: November 15th, 2010
The next day after being turned away at Salvation Army, I decided to head over to the reuse center. They were more than happy to take the mattress for a donation. I realized that their demographic is entirely different from the one I'm used to. The Salvation Army focuses on providing things for low-income families. While the Reuse Center has the same clientele, it also focuses on people who are committed to recycling and who want to use things for purposes other than their originally intended one. For example, I'd go there if I needed an old door for an art piece. So maybe that mattress will become the padded wall in a music video or a fort or something. That would be neat.
Day 314 - Live at One-Mile-An-Hour
Date: November 16th, 2010
A couple years ago, I saw a news story about a doctor who "lives at one mile an hour". What that means is that instead of sitting at a desk all day, he had a specially raised desk set up and he walks on a treadmill, at one mile an hour, all day. I thought that was genius at the time, but it never occurred to me to try it at home... until I realized I'd never done it before. It was hard as heck. My feet started hurting after a while and I got very fatigued.
I think its worth doing again though. In particular the fact that, at one mile an hour, my head wasn't moving too much to do reading or typing on a computer. It did make it possible to be productive, which surprised me. Well, that and I got to watch a couple episodes of CSI:Miami and call it part of my project. YYYEEEEAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
Day 315 - Finish and Send in my Bar Application
Date: November 17th, 2010
Ahh, adulthood. You crept up so fast, ya sneaky bastard.
Day 316 - Share a Recipe
Date: November 18th, 2010
My cooking generally involves one pan, butter and garlic salt. And then whatever vehicle I've chosen for the butter and garlic salt. However, once I started this diet that I'm on (a couple months and almost 30 pounds ago), I realized I had to actually start understanding how flavor works instead of phoning it in. I discovered a great recipe for homemade cream cheese dip that fits my diet perfectly. Granted I fell back on one of my old staples (garlic salt), but that was a deliberate choice.
In any case, it was the first time, in my life, that I personally came up with a recipe and felt good enough about it to share it with someone. I've passed along my parents tips before, but the thought of a friend of mine actually preparing something that I personally came up with makes me incredibly happy.

So ends my week, but as I said, that second wind is a blowing. Expect actual, substantive updates in the near future.
